Literature Text

The small fishing boat bobbed rhythmically in the ocean, swaying uneasily. The boat was made from old, rotting wood and the anchor a simple large rock attacked to a long strands of peasant hair that had weaved together to create rope. [Name] groaned and buried her face, which had turned a magnificent shade of green, in her sleeved arms.

This was not how she intended to spend her day.

Mathias laughed at his sister, who's face looked ready to abandon all reason and hurl her breakfast to the fishes. Standing up on the small boat, holding nothing but a small walrus hide rope and a small harpoon attached to the rope he was at total ease. Contrary to his sister who looked ready to pass out.

"Mathias," she groaned, "Are we finished?"

The blonde laughed once more and snagged at a fish, pulling the slimy and scaly creature out of the water. He tossed it to his sister who whimpered as it flipped and flopped around on the deck. She covered her mouth once more and immediately diverted her gaze.

The fish squirmed and its tail slapped her bare leg making her shriek and almost tip the boat in a futile attempt to manoeuvre away from the horrible creature.

Matthias continued to laugh, though more loudly this time as he doubled over clutching his sides.

"Get it off! Get it off!" [Name] shrieked kicking out randomly in an attempt to usher the beast away, only for the hopeless little fish to innocently flop around and smack her again.

Still laughing heavily, her brother reached down and plucked the scaily creature from the deck and hauled it into the small wooden bucket filled with the same marine life. He inclined his head back, glancing at his poor sister who was curled up in the corner of the boat shaking and trembling, looking absolutely traumatise.

"You look like your having a ball, sister!"

"You insufferable wrench!" She cried, her face red from embarrassment.

He smiled softly down at her, feeling a little remorseful for what he had done and stuck his calloused hand out. [Name] took it hesitantly and he pulled her into a standing position on the rickety old boat. "C'mom, [Name]. Let's go back to Mor."

Nodding her head, [Name] turned and grabbed the rope -wincing when she remembered it was walrus hide- and began to pull.

This was just one day she did not want to spend but had no choice but to relive it.

Every day.

-;-

"Mor! We're home!"

[Name] winced at the obnoxiousness of her brother, who seemed unaware his voice was really loud. She hissed at him quietly to keep it down and she drew the curtain that covered the entrance.

The small family of three lived in a village with only twenty five people in it. They thrived in the environment, however, as they live close enough to the sea in order to bring in sea food, but further back enough to raise cattle and crops. Everyone owned their own land to serve this purpose and a small wooden hut.

"I'm in the kitchen," Mor called back. The two siblings turned, each carrying their buckets of food towards the direction of their mothers voice. She was using a hunting knife to strip the beef of the fats and drying it out on the woven grass that served as a hanger. Several strips had been strung out to dry. [Name] grabbed the other hunting knife and began to fillet the fish whilst the only male of the home grabbed the preserving salt.

"Ah, ah."

[Name] paused mid way through pulling out a fish when her mother 'hmmed' slightly. She indicated to the knife and motioned her daughter to put it down to which she complied.

"No need for that yet. I need you two to go up to the mountains and fetch the preservatives. It's been long enough and we need to keep the fresher ones for winter."

Mattias mumbled something, annoyed that he had to go up to the mountains (which wasn't something he enjoyed as it was very cold) but nodded his head in agreement. [Name] sighed and grabbed her stripped woollen stockings to put under her cow hide dress.

Mattias dressed similar, wearing woollen pants and a cow hide sleeved shirt. He had put on matching calf length boots that had fur lining, just like his sisters.

While her brother grabbed the makeshift shovel, which was a large slab of wood hollowed out and curved to form a sort of gaping mouth complete with a handle, [Name] fiddled with the fur lining on the hem of her dress and short sleeves. Underneath her dress was a woollen long sleeved shirt, same as her stockings, to keep her warm.

Mor smiled at her daughter, her face worn and creased before handing her a simple makeshift hunting arrow. It was poorly made, the young [h/c] female noted, but took it anyway because no matter what it was still useful. She slipped the single arrow in her belt (which essentially was just a simple cow hide rope tied around her waist) and grabbed her bow.

"You two be careful now," the elder [h/c] woman warned, blue eyes watching them sternly, "Take care of each other."

"Yes, Mor." They responded before heading out together. The younger female had zoned out, noted Mattias. So he laughed and jabbed his sisters arm, "What in the high heavens could you possibly be thinking about now, [Name]? Ah, are we reminiscing about the oh so scary woods again, hmm?"

'Ah, what a tease,' [Name] thought bitterly, narrowing her [e/c] eyes at him, she retorted haughtily, "No. I'm thinking how much it's worth to trade you over." Mattias snorted but didn't reply. There was no need to anyway.

"...besides," [Name] mumbled, turning her head away from her brother, "It was only that one time!"

The blonde rolled his eyes at this statement; he had dragged her up to the hill- when she was about eight- in order to have help with hauling the goods home, when she had let out a strangled scream thinking something had touched her. In reality it was just a branch brushing against the thin fabric of her dress but it didn't stop her from shaking like a leaf.

"I have you to protect me anyway..." She added quietly, blushing. She glanced at her brother from the corner of her eye and resisted the urge to face palm. She didn't think it was humanly possibly but his grin had spread even wider. It looked ready to split his face in half.

Mattias pulled [Name] into a sideways hug, laughing obnoxiously at her red face. She shoved him off harshly and bowed her head, allowing the stands of [h/c] to cover her face, falling from her ponytail she had yanked it in.

"You're too cute!"

"Shut it!"

The two passed the final house and began making their way up the rocky path. The slope deepened making them using more energy, however as they did this trip almost every day it was hardly of consequence. [Name] took this time to admire the scenery.

The sun was high in the sky, causing it to reflect against the shimmering waves of the ocean. The ocean itself was quite beautiful, which was a deep blue gradually turning into a gradient of varying shades. The waves gentle lapped at the shore, the same bright and unblemished. A warm wind was gently tousling the flowers that grew on the grass near the beach. Slowly, as the grass stretched further up, the more flowers there were, bright and radiant. They crawled up to where they were standing, varying colours and looking absolutely fabulous.

Closing her [e/c] eyes she took a deep breath, inhaling the salty sea air. A smile spread across her lips. This was her home.

Mattias groaned, seeing his had stopped moving. Reaching out he tugged at her wrist and pulled her further up the hill. The girl protested and whined but her brother was just too strong.

She huffed finally and turned her head away from her brother (again) and towards the sea, pretending to be mad.

Mattias smiled at her childish attitude but frowned suddenly. He quickly tugged her forward, making the girl stumble, and pulled her into his muscled chest.

"M-MATTIAS!" She cried out, startled (with a huge red blush starting to coat her cheeks), "What on earth are you doing-"

"SHH!" He hissed, pulling her down behind one of many large boulder that were scattered across the path.

"What?" She whispered back, "What is it?"

[Name] felt a sharp pang through her chest, one of absolute fear when she looked into the familiar blue orbs that belonged to her sibling. Instead of the usual mischievous twinge in it that he normally had, all she could see was terror. He big brother was absolutely horrified.

He pointed out from behind the bolder, to the sea, his masculine hand shaking.

Squinting her [e/c] orbs in the direction he was pointing at she struggled to see what exactly he was trying to show her.

Until she saw the fleet of ships.

Her eyes widened in horror, mouth dropping down in shock. She tried to say something, anything, to pull them out of the trance, to ignore the rapid thumping of her heart. Her mouth had gone dry, however.

"Viking ships..." Mattias whispered.

So.. Yeah.

I am uploading the first two chapters in one day because if I don't I'll forget. So yeah, enjoy?
